Debt Free! I paid off my Medical school loans! Bitcoin changed my life!

I started mining around 2012. Started mining on GPUs to build out an amazing gaming rig and just kept upgrading the rigs. I just kept getting more, GPUs and my home started looking like a server.
Even got one of the first Butterfly ASICs (mined a few bitcoins realized I would net more bitcoins selling it on Ebay and buying in). Slowly I stopped mining as my GPUs stopped getting a profit and my overclocked gpus slowly burnt themselves out.
Then I just hodl. Just didn't pay attention, checked out, and said I wouldn't do anything until it changed my life.
Fam, this last month it changed my life. I said I would sell at 10K to pay off loans, then it shot up to 18 before I knew it. This is amazing, I sold not even 10% of my hodlings and am now debt free.
Again, I am drawing the sell line in the sand. Not until it changes my life again. This time the line is to buy a house, when I can do that with Bitcoin I will have to part with a little bit more. Excited for that day!

Please don't fall for "get money tax free for your Bitcoin" scam loans

More and more I'm seeing ads disguised as press releases for cryptocurrency loans. These are loans where you put up Bitcoin or other cryptocurrency as collateral and get a loan in cash. They are being advertised with the dubious designation of being "a way to get cash for your crypto cash free."
I'm sure I'm going to make a lot of people mad by saying this, but this is very deceptive marketing. It's designed to get you emotional and make you think you've found a way to pull a fast one on the government: get tax free money for your crypto! Great, right? But YOU are the one who is having a fast one pulled on you here, not the government.
The fact that these loans are tax free is about as relevant as the "fat free" label I often see on Halloween candy. "Fat free" candy corn will not keep you from getting fat, and a "tax free" crypto-collateral loan is not a way to sell cryptocurrency without paying taxes.
There is no loophole for you here. This is not a SALE. It's a LOAN. That means you have to pay it back!
What this is is a loan where you put up cryptocurrency for collateral. You will have to pay back the fiat you borrow, the principle, plus interest. But it's worse than that. If the cryptocurrency you put up as collateral goes down in value you will also have to send them MORE cryptocurrency to top it off back up to the original value. The LENDER is perfectly shielded from the risk of the volatility of the cryptocurrency here, and YOU are EXPOSED to it! You would be better off just getting credit cards or a loan at your bank if you need short term cash.
These loans are a great deal for the lenders, I'm sure, and I'm positive they are going to be mad at people like me who point out who this works and point out how they are trying to manipulate you with this "tax free" marketing speak. Don't fall for it! I won't you guys to be healthy financially - not in hock up to your eyeballs without a Satoshi to show for it.
Let me just add that part of the marketing speak here is "We are now making available to crypto holders a tool that has been available to billionaires for decades." Again the goal here is to get you emotional and irrational so you won't think about the fact that all you are doing is signing up for a loan and giving up your cryptocurrency. Sure billionaires have had the option to throw it all away for decades, but why would you want to do that? This is a LOAN to you, not a SALE you are making. You aren't being smart here. You aren't leveraging anything. YOU are being leveraged. YOU are the product. YOU are being sold: your future income is being sold off to pay for this short term cash.
Work hard, save your money, build the crypto ecosystem, and build wealth by creating it. You can't borrow your way to wealth. Avoid people who butter you up and flatter your intelligence to get you to make a deal with them.

SQ

I like Square as a company and see a lot of people are bullish about it. However, a few things stop me from investing. Be interested to hear thoughts but at the moment I am a Square bear.
Management
Jack Dorsey is a visionary. I don’t think this is controversial. However, his track record at Twitter is worrying for shareholders. Be it daily active user growth, ambition with acquisitions but ultimately failure to monetise a fantastic platform where you have big corporations, celebrities and even the President reaching out to 200m daily active users for free. With Square, the closed loop business model of businesses and consumers is again a fantastic concept that could break the power of Visa/Mastercard. Execution remains to be seen, of course.
Competition
Square operate in a highly competitive field for consumers and businesses. Let’s take consumers based on Square’s fast-growing Cash App. It offers things a normal bank does like deposits, ATM access, money transfer. If it becomes a fully-fledged bank offering loans, credit; it is competing against the likes of big incumbents (e.g. JP Morgan, Bank of America). Granted they’re dinosaur firms but they already have a huge customer base that are older and, therefore, have more money and deposits. This means it is much easier for them to monetise their customers resulting in high ARPU. Why would these lucrative customers, en-masse, want to uproot their finances to Square when their existing providers will be providing the same service by copying Square, as JP Morgan have done this week? Link
For businesses, Square’s provides software offering (invoicing, PoS, online store) but face strong competition from the likes of Shopify who are taking a fully integrated service approach to SMEs which allows them to take their business online but also manage all their backend processes, including payments. This is a highly convenient service for entrepreneurs. Shopify already has 6% share of the online retail market. Square also provides hardware products which make it easy for SMEs, in particular, to take payments. However, there is evidence that retail is facing a more permanent shift in the US vs. the rest of the world with 60% less footfall today than a year ago Link. 58% of Square’s GPV is from food/drink, retail and professional services. Square may have good market share but it is a shrinking industry.
And as a final piece, competitors in both spaces are generally in very healthy financial shape: Paypal, Shopify, Global Payments, Western Union and big banks are well-capitalised.
Valuation
Perhaps you can get over the above with the fact that Square has strong network effects and are able to win customers cheaply. However, in my opinion, Square is priced for perfection. Simply looking at a price/sales metric, it is trading 13x LTM. This is high but maybe relatively reasonable for a fast-growing business. However, 25% of Square’s revenue is accounted by Bitcoin “revenue”. This brings little value to Square (2% gross profit) and even Square themselves discount this revenue in their KPIs because it is “out of their control and not reflective of Square’s performance”.
Now onto profits. It is not fair to be too hard on Square’s profitability. After all, it is in high growth phase and its marketing costs were its highest opex line item at roughly 35% for YTD. However, a cursory look at it is Enterprise Value / EBITDA (forward look to Dec2020), it is 242x. If we give credit for Square’s business plan for a further two years, today’s Enterprise Value over broker consensus forecast EBITDA for 2022, it is still a heady 77x. This is when Square is supposed to have EBITDA of $1bn which is three times more than it is forecast for Dec 2020. Priced to perfection.
If you compare it to Paypal, it is trading at 39x and 27x EV / EBITDA for Dec 2020 and 2022.
Conclusion
Square has formidable backers like Ark Invest. I am also not a great believer in “dumb retail” overvaluing a stock for a prolonged period of time. But for reasons above, I am cautious with Square and yet it keeps climbing so please tell me what I am missing…

Observations & Realizations of a Crypto newbie:

Just started wading into the crypto market this past March and have learned a couple of things, mostly from reading this reddit:
Never share your recovery key words with anyone, EVER. It doesn’t matter how legit they appear to be, if they are asking for your 24 words, they are going to empty your wallet. Giving your words are worse than giving a mustache twirling stranger your debit card and bank pin. If you get your checking account emptied, you can call the police to report the theft and plead with the bank to get your funds returned. That is not really an option with crypto, you are just shit out of luck.
Keep your key list someplace safe. Do not rely on anything on-line or on your computer. Your keys need to be written on paper, carved in stone or stamped on steel - don’t care which so long as it is physical not digital. Once you have your hard copy you need to double check, then triple check, the words themselves and the order of. You have your keys? Now put them in some place secure like your fire resistant file box, parents lock box or someplace that is understood to be depositor of things you really don’t want to lose. For fucks sake don’t use a screen capture you saved to Google Photo as your backup.
All the Youtube videos, Coinwhatever articles and Crypto forecasts are all pretty much useless. The worst of them are trying influence the market with hype for their own gains or exist to collect the revenue for media content. Some of these may be legitimate but are only useful for people with wallets big enough that a 5% wobble in price and some good timing would outpace the fees for a profit that’s worth the effort. But those people already know what they are doing and don’t need a parrot to confirm. The Crypto environment is jam packed with hypers, and dreamers. Disregard half of everything you hear, see or read about Crypto and be very suspicious of the rest.
Chances are that the browser plug-in or application you are using is, or will be, compromised.
If you are using your phone for retail purchases or trading, only have enough funds to do what you need accessible from that device. At some point that phone is going to either die or get stollen. It’s a lot easier getting over $20 than $20k.
The mechanics joke about “Good, Fast or Cheap - pick 2” holds true for the Crypto Trading platforms.
Never leave coins that you are not currently trading with in a wallet supplied by what ever market you are using. Move anything you plan on holding to a wallet that you have the keys to.
Don’t sit and watch the market do its thing, especially if you are holding. Ignore the market until you have a few dollars to put in, wait for a dip that strikes your fancy and buy, then go back to ignoring it. If you sit and stare, you start getting ideas & those usually don’t work out as planned for most of us.
Acronyms, there are so many acronyms. If there is a glossary of acronyms for the Crypto world please link in the comments.

You're welcome everyone, I sold Saturday evening to pay off my car loan. Obviously the catalyst for this run.

Can't complain too much since I made profit, but if I had held 2 more days I would have made 12% more. And at least I don't have a car payment anymore.

Where to invest undergraduate student loans? HISA, GIC?

Hi, I am a student who will be completing my undergrad degree for another 2-3 years. I have an emergency fund, and a lump sum of around $50k that I will be investing in stocks couch potato style. I understand that I should max out my TFSA as much as possible while doing so.
I am withdrawing student loans every year, I estimate that within a week I will have a total of $15k in loans sitting in my RBC savings account. My actual tuition is paid for by my family but I will need to repay these loans.
My question is: I will have this $15k interest free loan for 2.5-3.5 years and I would like some advice on how to invest it. Furthermore, 1 year from now I will receive an additional $7.5k in loans, and the year after another $7.5k. Your financial advice would be much appreciated. Thank you!

Never Sell - do the math for a Secured Loan.

tl/dr: Don't sell, do the math for a secured loan.
About 4 years ago, I capitulated that I was never going to get out of debt. As soon as one debt was paid down, an emergency would arise, and debt would get loaded back up. After food, nearly all of my payments were to meet minimum debt servicing. Any extra would go to the highest interest rate.
I looked to bitcoin, and realized it was money that couldn't be taken from me in the event I defaulted on these cards, mortgage, hospital bills, etc, which was a distinct possibility if my health failed for longer than a week or two. In a worst case scenario, if I had bitcoin, I would have some money no one could take from me in a judgment.
So, I sacrificed even further, and completely hopeless about the debt, I stopped paying more than the monthly minimums. I started putting all left-over money aside into bitcoin, seeing its meteoric rise in 2017. It wasn't a lot at first, thankfully, because I got burned when the bubble popped in December 2017, so after that, I picked a number that I thought bitcoin was worth, and I kept buying it weekly anytime it was below $10k. When it was above $10k, I would put that money to pay down one of the debts more than its minimum.
I initially had a plan to sell some of the bitcoin I'd been saving - at the end of 2020, I could sell what I'd bought through 2018 for the best capital gains rate, and then I'd pay my debt down even further.
Now that we're nearing the end of 2020, I've been forced to re-evaluate my plan, because my outlook on money and bitcoin has completely changed over the past 3 years. In addition to building my bitcoin nest egg, I've managed to to pay off 1/4 of my debt, refinance my house at a lower rate, build up an emergency fund, continue to DCA into bitcoin, handle multiple emergencies that have arisen, and survived the Covid lockdown. These are things I never would have been able to do without a changed mindset.
Bitcoin is currently 15% over my DCA, and if I were to re-peg a bitcoin value for the next 4 years, I'd put it's low value at $35k, with highs near $100k. So why would I sell, even to clear debt, when the future value is ridiculously more than any interest I'd save paying down debt? Even if I used the extra monthly liquidity from removing a debt, my DCA would still rise dramatically, because any more dips below $10k are becoming unlikely.
So I did some math; if I secure a $5,000 loan with 1 bitcoin, at 10% interest over 12 months, that's $500 interest to pay. The credit card it's paying off would be $800 interest over the same time, with ~$200/month min. payments, and it would take much longer than 1 year at those payments. Even if I can't do more than $200/month payments on the bitcoin loan, the margin call at the end of the loan would be for less bitcoin than I had planned to sell at the end of this year, which wouldn't have paid off the loan fully to begin with. Much less bitcoin lost if the price rises anywhere near predictions.
I have enough in my emergency funding to prevent a margin call before the loan is due (if bitcoin drops to $7500), and I have enough monthly cash flow now to make $500/month payments without further sacrifice. This way, I can spend my bitcoin and keep it, too. Roll that $500 total interest paid into the DCA, and it's barely anything at all. At the end of it, I've saved over $300 in C.C. interest, cleared more unsecured debt, and kept my bitcoin. This is the best of all worlds.
Then I can do it again to take care of my last unsecured loan, and be debt free (except mortgage) without selling any of my capital. I can almost see the light at the end of the debt tunnel, guys.
The math doesn't seem to work on the mortgage - not yet, anyway. But my plan-B has changed folks - so long as I'm capable of working, I'm not selling bitcoin, ever. When I can't work anymore, I hope to have enough bitcoin saved up to live off of, and soon I can get there even more quickly.

Another person got scammed....

I just met with an old friend, i remember she told me she invested 3 million Colombian peso in April, 2017 in Bitcoin.
That was +/- $1,060 USD that time or +/- $9,400 today.
When i told her how much it was worth today she was excited because today that's 36 million peso where i live.
And she has a debt to pay to the bank on a loan for an apartment, especially now during the crisis that would put her out of debt instantly.
So obviously i asked her if she still had the "seed" or wallet in a secure place, she didn't understand what i was asking.
A bit deeper into the conversation she told me her son knew a guy to invest bitcoin, he told her that there was a flat fee of 1 million peso to open up a wallet and the other 2 million would be invested.
I told her she got scammed, because she did not have the private key of her wallet and when she asked to get money from her investment this person again lied to her and told her that whats left of today is only 250,000 Colombian pesos or $65 USD.
There was no contract or anything written on paper, the only thing as evidence she had was a mail on how much money they agreed to invest.
I'm thinking now of offering some free/paid advice now trough online marketplaces in my city and country, people need to know they can open a wallet for free and how to purchase Bitcoins themselves and how they can secure their investments with a hardware wallet and how to sell their Bitcoin.
I see daily stories on Reddit/TwitteFacebook of people getting scammed, ive also been selling hardware wallets trough my online store in my country ( i'm not an authorized distributor but i've prevented some scams where other online sellers sold opened/tampered wallets )

Crypto Investing for Dummies (quite literally)

I'm not exactly a veteran, but after 3 years in this game I wanted to offer some advice for any newbies here:
  1. Don't do your own research. Just ask someone on reddit what to invest in. They will be happy to help and it will save you a lot of time and hard work.
  2. Always invest more than you can afford to lose. If you don't have enough money, try to take out a loan.
  3. When your hairdresse mechanic/ aunt Wilma tells you they've just bought Bitcoin, you know it's time to max out those credit cards (if for some inexplicable reason you haven't already) and go all in!
  4. Want to double your holdings? Go on twitter and you will find plenty of celebrities who are willing to give you back double whatever you send them. I shit you not.
  5. Don't take profits (in the unlikely event that you have any profits after following the above advice). Instead, hodl your coins all the way from the top of the bull down to the bottom of the bear. When you're approximately 95% in the red and everyone is saying 'Bitcoin is dead' it's finally time to give up and sell. But fear not- your sacrifice will signal the beginning of the next great bullrun.
  6. And finally, (as you will no longer have money left for a car or a haircut) make sure you wait for your aunt Wilma to give you the buy signal before you re-enter the market, telling yourself you've learned from all your previous mistakes and will definitely not be making those same mistakes again.
Have I forgotten anything? Feel free to share your words of wisdom in the comments below.
