Let’s take a lucky guess that you’re here today because you’ve heard a lot about cryptocurrencies and you want to get involved, right? If you’re a community person, Dogecoin mining might be the perfect start for you!
Bitcoin was the first in 2009, and now there are hundreds of cryptocurrencies. These new coins (that operate on their own native blockchain) are called altcoins or alternative coins. One popular altcoin is Dogecoin. It can be bought, sold and traded, just like Bitcoin. It can also be mined!
So, what is Dogecoin mining?
You’ll know what hardware and what software you need to get started. You’ll also know whether or not Dogecoin mining is for you!
So, where would you like to start? The beginning? Great choice. Let’s have a quick look at how Dogecoin got started.
A (Very) Short History of Dogecoin
In 2013, an Australian named Jackson Palmer and an American named Billy Markus became friends. They became friends because they both liked cryptocurrencies. However, they also thought the whole thing was getting too serious so they decided to create their own.
Palmer and Markus wanted their coin to be more fun and more friendly than other crypto coins. They wanted people who wouldn’t normally care about crypto to get involved.
They decided to use a popular meme as their mascot — a Shiba Inu dog.
Dogecoin was launched on December 6th, 2013. Since then it has become popular because it’s playful and good-natured. Just like its mascot!
Dogecoin has become well-known for its use in charitable acts and online tipping. In 2014, $50,000 worth of Dogecoin was donated to the Jamaican Bobsled Team so they could go to the Olympics. Dogecoin has also been used to build wells in Kenya. Isn’t that awesome!
Users of social platforms – like Reddit – can use Dogecoin to tip or reward each other for posting good content.
Dogecoin has the 27th largest market cap of any cryptocurrency.
Note: A market cap (or market capitalization) is the total value of all coins on the market.
So, Dogecoin is a popular altcoin, known for being fun, friendly and kind. It’s a coin with a dog on it! You love it already, don’t you?
Next, I want to talk about how mining works…
What is Mining?
To understand mining, you first need to understand how cryptocurrencies work. Cryptocurrencies are peer-to-peer digital currencies. This means that they allow money to be transferred from one person to another without using a bank.
Every cryptocurrency transaction is recorded on a huge digital database called a blockchain. The database is stored across thousands of computers called nodes. Nodes put together groups of new transactions and add them to the blockchain. These groups are called blocks.
Each block of transactions has to be checked by all the nodes on the network before being added to the blockchain. If nodes didn’t check transactions, people could pretend that they have more money than they really do (I know I would!).
Confirming transactions (mining) requires a lot of computer power and electricity so it’s quite expensive.
Blockchains don’t have paid employees like banks, so they offer a reward to users who confirm transactions. The reward for confirming new transactions is new cryptocurrency. The process of being rewarded with new currency for confirming transactions is what we call “mining”!
It is called mining because it’s a bit like digging for gold or diamonds. Instead of digging with a shovel for gold, you’re digging with your computer for crypto coins!
Each cryptocurrency has its own blockchain. Different ways of mining new currency are used by different coins where different rewards are offered.
So, how do you mine Dogecoin? What’s special about Dogecoin mining? Let’s see…
What is Dogecoin Mining?
Dogecoin mining is the process of being rewarded with new Dogecoin for checking transactions on the Dogecoin blockchain. Simple, right? Well no, it’s not quite that simple, nothing ever is!
Mining Dogecoin is like a lottery. To play the lottery you have to do some work. Well, actually your computer (or node) has to do some work! This work involves the confirming and checking of transactions which I talked about in the last section.
Lots of computers work on the same block of transactions at the same time but the only one can win the reward of new coins. The one that earns the new coins is the node that adds the new block of transactions to the old block of transactions. This is completed using complex mathematical equations.
The node that solves the mathematical problem first wins! It can then attach the newly confirmed block of transactions to the rest of the blockchain.
Most cryptocurrency mining happens this way. However, Dogecoin mining differs from other coins in several important areas. These areas are;
  • Algorithm: Each cryptocurrency has a set of rules for mining new currency. These rules are called a mining or hashing algorithm.
  • Block Time: This is the average length of time it takes for a new block of transactions to be checked and added to the blockchain.
  • Difficulty: This is a number that represents how hard it is to mine each new block of currency. You can use the difficulty number to work out how likely you are to win the mining lottery. Mining difficulty can go up or down depending on how many miners there are. The difficulty is also adjusted by the coin’s protocol to make sure that the block time stays the same.
  • Reward: This is the amount of new currency that is awarded to the miner of each new block.
Now, let’s compare how DogeCoin mining works compared to Litecoin and Bitcoin…
Mining Comparison
Bitcoin uses SHA-256 to guide the mining of new currency and the other two use Scrypt. This is an important difference because Scrypt mining needs a lot less power and is a lot quicker than SHA-256. This makes mining easier for miners with less powerful computers. Fans of Litecoin and Dogecoin think that they are fairer than Bitcoin because more people can mine them.
Note: In 2014, Litecoin and Dogecoin merged mining. This means they made it possible to mine both coins in the same process. Dogecoin mining is now linked with Litecoin mining. It’s like two different football teams playing home games in the same stadium!
Mining Dogecoin is a lot faster than mining Litecoin or Bitcoin. The block reward is much higher too!
Don’t get too excited though (sorry!). Dogecoin is still worth a lot less than Bitcoin and Litecoin. A reward of ten thousand Dogecoin is worth less than thirty US Dollars. A reward of 12.5 Bitcoin is currently worth 86,391.63 US Dollars!
However, it’s not as bad as it sounds. Dogecoin mining difficulty is more than one million times less than Bitcoin mining difficulty. This means you are much more likely to win the block reward when you mine Dogecoin.

How to Mine Dogecoin
There are two ways to mine Dogecoin, solo (by yourself) or in a Dogecoin mining pool.
Note: A Dogecoin pool is a group of users who share their computing power to increase the odds of winning the race to confirm transactions. When one of the nodes in a pool confirms a transaction, it divides the reward between the users of the pool equally.
Dogecoin Mining: Solo vs Pool
When you mine as a part of a Dogecoin pool, you have to pay fees. Also, when the pool mines a block you will only receive a small portion of the total reward. However, pools mine blocks much more often than solo miners. So, your chance of earning a reward (even though it is shared) is increased. This can provide you with a steady new supply of Dogecoin.
If you choose to mine solo then you risk waiting a long time to confirm a transaction because there is a lot of competition. It could be weeks or even months before you mine your first block! However, when you do win, the whole reward will be yours. You won’t have to share it or pay any fees.
As a beginner, I would recommend joining a Dogecoin pool. This way you won’t have to wait as long to mine your first block of new currency. You’ll also feel like you’re part of the community and that’s what Dogecoin is all about!
What You Need To Start Mining Dogecoin
Before you start Dogecoin mining, you’ll need a few basics. They are;
  • A PC with either Windows, OS X or Linux operating system.
  • An internet connection
  • A Shiba Inu puppy (just kidding!)
You’ll also need somewhere to keep the Dogecoin you mine. Go to Dogecoin’s homepage and download a wallet.
Note: A wallet is like an email account. It has a public address for sending/receiving Dogecoin and a private key to access them. Your private keys are like your email’s password. Private keys are very important and need to be kept completely secure.
There are two different types; a light wallet and a full wallet. To mine Dogecoin, you’ll need the full wallet. It’s called Dogecoin Core.
Now that you’ve got a wallet, you need some software and hardware.
Dogecoin Mining Hardware
You can mine Dogecoin with;
  • Your PC’s CPU: The CPU in your PC is probably powerful enough to mine Dogecoin. However, it is not recommended. Mining can cause less powerful computers to overheat which causes damage.
  • A GPU: GPUs (or graphics cards) are used to improve computer graphics but they can also be used to mine Dogecoin. There are plenty of GPUs to choose from but here are a few to get you started;SAPPHIRE Pulse Radeon RX 580 ($426.98)Nvidia GeForce GTX ($579.99)ASUS RX Vega 64 ($944.90)

Dogecoin Mining Software
Whether you’re mining with an ASIC, a GPU or a CPU, you’ll need some software to go with it. You should try to use the software that works best with the hardware you’re using. Here’s a short list of the best free software for each choice of mining hardware;
  • CPU: If you just want to give mining a quick try, using your computer’s CPU will work fine. The only software I would recommend for mining using a CPU only is CPU miner which you can download for free here.
  • GPU: If you mine with a GPU there are more software options. Here are a few to check out;CudaMiner– Works best with Nvidia products.CGminer– Works with most GPU hardware.EasyMiner– User-friendly, so it’s good for beginners.
  • Scrypt ASIC miner:MultiMiner– Great for mining scrypt based currencies like Litecoin and Dogecoin. It can also be used to mine SHA-256 currencies like Bitcoin.CGminer and EasyMiner can also be used with ASIC miners.
You’re a beginner, so keep it simple! When you first start mining Dogecoin I would recommend using a GPU like the Radeon RX 580 with EasyMiner software. Then I would recommend joining a Dogecoin mining pool. The best pools to join are multi-currency pools like Multipool or AikaPool.
If you want to mine Dogecoin but don’t want to invest in all the tech, there is one other option…
Dogecoin Cloud Mining
Cloud mining is mining without mining! Put simply, you rent computer power from a huge data center for a monthly or yearly fee. The Dogecoin is mined at the center and then your share is sent to you.
All you need to cloud mine Dogecoin is a Dogecoin wallet. Then choose a cloud mining pool to join. Eobot, Nice Hash and Genesis Mining all offer Scrypt-based cloud mining for a monthly fee.
There are pros and cons to Dogecoin cloud mining;
The Pros
  • It’s cheaper than setting up your own mining operation. There’s also no hot, noisy hardware lying around the house!
  • As a beginner, there isn’t a lot of technical stuff to think about.
  • You get a steady supply of new currency every month.
The Cons
  • Cloud mining pools don’t share much information about themselves and how they work. It can be hard to work out if a cloud mining contract is a good value for money.
  • You are only renting computer power. If the price of Dogecoin goes down, you will still have to pay the same amount for something that is worthless.
  • Dogecoin pools have fixed contracts. The world of crypto can change very quickly. You could be stuck with an unprofitable contract for two years!
  • It’s no fun letting someone else do the mining for you!

So, Is Dogecoin Mining Profitable?

Similar digital currencies have crept into the worldwide market since then, including a spin-off from Bitcoin called Bitcoin Cash. You can get in on the cryptocurrency rush if you take the time to learn the basics properly.

Which Alt-Coins Should Be Mined?

If you had started mining Bitcoins back in 2009, you could have earned thousands of dollars by now. At the same time, there are plenty of ways you could have lost money, too. Bitcoins are not a good choice for beginning miners who work on a small scale. The current up-front investment and maintenance costs, not to mention the sheer mathematical difficulty of the process, just doesn't make it profitable for consumer-level hardware. Now, Bitcoin mining is reserved for large-scale operations only.
Litecoins, Dogecoins, and Feathercoins, on the other hand, are three Scrypt-based cryptocurrencies that are the best cost-benefit for beginners.
Dogecoins and Feathercoins would yield slightly less profit with the same mining hardware but are becoming more popular daily. Peercoins, too, can also be a reasonably decent return on your investment of time and energy.
As more people join the cryptocoin rush, your choice could get more difficult to mine because more expensive hardware will be required to discover coins. You will be forced to either invest heavily if you want to stay mining that coin, or you will want to take your earnings and switch to an easier cryptocoin. Understanding the top 3 bitcoin mining methods is probably where you need to begin; this article focuses on mining "scrypt" coins.
Also, be sure you are in a country where bitcoins and bitcoin mining is legal.

Is It Worth It to Mine Cryptocoins?

As a hobby venture, yes, cryptocoin mining can generate a small income of perhaps a dollar or two per day. In particular, the digital currencies mentioned above are very accessible for regular people to mine, and a person can recoup $1000 in hardware costs in about 18-24 months.
As a second income, no, cryptocoin mining is not a reliable way to make substantial money for most people. The profit from mining cryptocoins only becomes significant when someone is willing to invest $3000-$5000 in up-front hardware costs, at which time you could potentially earn $50 per day or more.

Set Reosonable Expectations

If your objective is to earn substantial money as a second income, then you are better off purchasing cryptocoins with cash instead of mining them, and then tucking them away in the hopes that they will jump in value like gold or silver bullion. If your objective is to make a few digital bucks and spend them somehow, then you just might have a slow way to do that with mining.
Smart miners need to keep electricity costs to under $0.11 per kilowatt-hour; mining with 4 GPU video cards can net you around $8.00 to $10.00 per day (depending upon the cryptocurrency you choose), or around $250-$300 per month.
The two catches are:
1) The up-front investment in purchasing 4 ASIC processors or 4 AMD Radeon graphic processing units
2) The market value of cryptocoins
Now, there is a small chance that your chosen digital currency will jump in value alongside Bitcoin at some point. Then, possibly, you could find yourself sitting on thousands of dollars in cryptocoins. The emphasis here is on "small chance," with small meaning "slightly better than winning the lottery."
If you do decide to try cryptocoin mining, definitely do so as a hobby with a very small income return. Think of it as "gathering gold dust" instead of collecting actual gold nuggets. And always, always, do your research to avoid a scam currency.

How Cryptocoin Mining Works

Let's focus on mining scrypt coins, namely Litecoins, Dogecoins, or Feathercoins. The whole focus of mining is to accomplish three things:
- Provide bookkeeping services to the coin network. Mining is essentially 24/7 computer accounting called "verifying transactions."
- Get paid a small reward for your accounting services by receiving fractions of coins every couple of days.
- Keep your personal costs down, including electricity and hardware.

The Laundry List: What You Will Need to Mine Cryptocoins
You will need ten things to mine Litecoins, Dogecoins, and/or Feathercoins.
1) A free private database called a coin wallet. This is a password-protected container that stores your earnings and keeps a network-wide ledger of transactions.
2) A free mining software package, like this one from AMD, typically made up of cgminer and stratum.
3) A membership in an online mining pool, which is a community of miners who combine their computers to increase profitability and income stability.
4) Membership at an online currency exchange, where you can exchange your virtual coins for conventional cash, and vice versa.
5) A reliable full-time internet connection, ideally 2 megabits per second or faster speed.
6) A hardware setup location in your basement or other cool and air-conditioned space.
7) A desktop or custom-built computer designed for mining. Yes, you may use your current computer to start, but you won't be able to use the computer while the miner is running. A separate dedicated computer is ideal. Do not use a laptop, gaming console or handheld device to mine. These devices just are not effective enough to generate income.
8) An ATI graphics processing unit (GPU) or a specialized processing device called a mining ASIC chip. The cost will be anywhere from $90 used to $3000 new for each GPU or ASIC chip. The GPU or ASIC will be the workhorse of providing the accounting services and mining work.
10) A house fan to blow cool air across your mining computer. Mining generates substantial heat, and cooling the hardware is critical for your success.
11) You absolutely need a strong appetite of personal curiosity for reading and constant learning, as there are ongoing technology changes and new techniques for optimizing coin mining results. The most successful coin miners spend hours every week studying the best ways to adjust and improve their coin mining performance.

Something is rotten in the state of DOGE mining

Shibes, something stinks in doge land. A problem in the design of dogecoin means that dishonest (or perhaps we should call them "creative") miners can take a disproportionate share of rewards, leaving everyone else to earn less than they deserve. Many of you have probably noticed that calculators estimate payouts larger than what you earn in practice (for example, dustcoin estimates ~1500DOGE/day @ 200KH/s while Non Stop Mine pays about a quarter of that rate), and most have written it off as bad luck: the blocks your pool found happened to be small, or your pool happened to be unlucky, and such is life. At least another friendly Shibe is having a better day, and it'll come around in tips anyway! Unfortunately, the truth is much darker.
The "random" DOGE rewards per block are not random. In fact, the value of each block is predetermined by a simple equation applied to the hash of the previous block. A creative miner can take advantage of this fact to mine dogecoin when the potential reward is high, and switch to litecoin when the potential reward is low. During some rounds, the reward is so small it isn't worth the electricity spent finding it; during more rounds, the reward is less than can be earned mining LTC; in a few rounds, the reward is spectacular. Honest miners mine with the expectation of earning an average of 500,000 DOGE per block, but when people are selectively mining the high-profit DOGE rounds, the average reward falls for honest miners.
So the question is: is this problem theoretical, or are honest miners really losing value to cheaters? I spent some time digging, and it appears that cheating is rampant! There are a few ways cheating can be detected.
If there is outside competition for high-value blocks, then pools should on average be finding blocks worth less than 500,000 DOGE (because some of the valuable blocks, but none of the low-value blocks, will be found by cheaters). The largest pool, Dogehouse, reports some useful averages: over all time, the pool has found 11,241 valid blocks worth 5365077071.0746 DOGE, for an average of 477,277 DOGE (including fees, which should actually raise the average above 500,000!). That's 4.5% below the expected average block value. Is it simply bad luck? No. With so many blocks found, there's about a 7% chance that the average will be above 505,000 or below 495,000; there's a <<1% chance their average will be above 510,000 or below 490,000, and effectively NO chance of seeing an average below 485,000. 477,000 is simply preposterous. Dogepool is either mind-bogglingly unlucky, or something is fishy.
Maybe Dogehouse is doing something fishy...but we can look at other pools. Dogechain's pool's all-time average block value is similar: 478847 DOGE. They're a smaller pool so the odds of this being bad luck aren't astronomical, but it's not very likely. Fast-pool's average is 477892. They're big enough that the odds are again astronomical.
And this only accounts for people cheating outside of the pools. Cheaters can operate inside our pools (more on this later)!
Maybe there's something wrong with the pools. They mostly run similar software. All their owners could be lying to us. We can check for signs of cheating independent of the pools: if more people are mining high-value blocks than low-value blocks, the hash-rate will be higher when the next block is high-value, so high-value blocks will be found faster than low-value blocks. Here's what you find if you look at 5000 recent blocks (blocks 80,001 to 85,000) and measure the average time to find a block, broken out by the block value:
I had to drop about 50 blocks which were missing good timestamps, but they're evenly distributed and shouldn't skew the averages.
The pattern is clear: the network is finding high-value blocks significantly faster than low-value blocks. Low-value rounds take as much as 10% longer than intended, and high-value rounds take around 5% less time than intended. Significant hashrate belongs to miners that cheat.
I mentioned cheaters can operate inside our pools. The payment algorithms used by most pools were carefully designed for bitcoin's (effectively) fixed block reward. They reliably protect against cheaters trying to hop in and out of pools based on short-term profitability, by making payouts solely dependent on the unknowable future (the straightforward pool payment schemes allow cheaters to look at a pool's recent history and use that to take an unfair share of its earnings; read this awesome paper for details). Since the future reward for a bitcoin pool is completely unknowable, PPLNS does not protect against a hopper who knows the future. In the case of Dogecoin, the future reward IS knowable, and PPLNS offers no protection.
Dogehouse is so big we can reasonably assume they'll find any particular block. Dogehouse is using a PPLNS target similar to an ordinary round's length. Someone who mines only during high-value rounds will, with high confidence, earn significantly more DOGE per share submitted than someone who mines Dogecoin 24/7. They also experience much lower variance in earnings.
The random block reward size needs to be removed. It's fun, but it rewards cheaters. Developing a more secure random block value selection technique is possible, but based on observations of GitHub, I do not trust the Dogecoin creator to get it right. Even subtle errors re-open the opportunity for cheating.
While I believe cheating is already unacceptably common, many will disagree until it worsens. To force the issue, I've included everything you need to join the cheaters.

Then, simply run two instances of cgminer with separate API ports, one configured for LTC and the other configured for DOGE.

Dogecoin on Linux - The Complete Beginner's Guide

I'm writing this because I couldn't find a single condensed guide on compiling the wallet and running mining software on linux, specficially Ubuntu/Linux Mint. I combed Bitcoin and Litecoin forums for similar problems I was running into and eventually got everything nailed down, so here it is in one place, for new Shibes.
If you want to make a Dogecoin directory in your downloads folder to keep things organized, you will need to modify these commands to refelct the change. So instead of going to ~/Downloads/ you will need to go to ~/Downloads/Dogecoin and be sure to put the zipped files there when you download them, but the commands will be the same otherwise.

Compiling the Wallet Manually
I suggest using the PPA above, but if you want to compile manually, here you go.
1)Download the newest source from here. If you want to check out the Github page, click here
2)Unzip the package with the native client OR, navigate to your downloads and unzip
cd ~/Downloads unzip 
3)Now it's time to compile. You will need to install the dependencies, just copy and paste the following code. It will be a fairly large download and could take some time. It is always important to update before installing any new software, so we'll do that first and then install the dependencies.

After running the qmake command you will likely see some text similar to

It's perfectly normal, so don't worry about that.
Your Dogewallet is ready to go! The executable is in ~/Downloads/dogecoin-maste and called dogecoin-qt. Your wallet information is in ~/.dogecoin. You can run the wallet at any time by opening terminal and typing
cd ~/Downloads/dogecoin-maste ./dogecoin-qt 
Future upgrades to dogewallet are easy. Back up your wallet.dat, and simply follow the same directions above, but you'll be unzipping and building the newer version. You will likely need to rename the old dogecoin-master directory in ~/Downloads before unzipping the newest version and building. Also, it is likely that you will not need to install the dependencies again.
Alternate Method For Installing Dogecoin Wallet from Nicebreakfast
After installing the dependencies listed in step 3, open terminal, then navigate to where you want Dogecoin Wallet stored and run:
git clone ./ ./configure make 
then when the wallet is updated just run
git pull 
from the dogecoin directory.
GPU Mining
GPU mining requires CGminer. My suggestion is to get the executable already built. The creator of cgminer has removed the built file from his website, but I've uploaded it here
sudo apt-get install pkg-config opencl-dev libcurl4-openssl-dev autoconf libtool automake m4 ncurses-dev cd ~/Downloads tar -xvf cgminer-3.7.2-x86_64-built.tar.bz2 
Don't use anything newer than 3.7.2. The newer versions of CGMiner don't support GPU mining.
That's it! You have cgminer ready to go! You will run cgminer with the following syntax
cd ~/Downloads/cgminer-3.7.2-x86_64-built/ ./cgminer --scrypt -o stratum+tcp://SERVERNAME:PORT -u WORKER.ID -p PASS 
A good guide for fine tuning cgminer can be found here; follow the litecoin example.
I had trouble getting cgminer running with a single line command, but running it via an executable .sh file works. This is covered in the cgminer setup guide I posted above but I'll put it here too. In the same directory that has the cgminer executable, you need to make a file called and make it executable. It should contain the follwing:
export GPU_USE_SYNC_OBJECTS=1 export GPU_MAX_ALLOC_PERCENT=100 export DISPLAY=:0 find *.bin -delete sleep 5 ./cgminer 
Then you can call cgminer in terminal by doing ./ You will need a cgminer.conf file containing all your options. All of this is covered in the guide that is linked above.
A quick note about AMD drivers: They used to be a huge PITA to install and get working, but the newest Catalyst drivers are great. There's a GUI installer, everything works out of the box, and there is a lot of documentation. You can download them here: AMD Catalyst 14.6 Beta Linux
CPU Mining
For CPU mining I use minerd because it doesn't require any work to get running, simply download it and get to work. Download the built file for your machine 32-bit or 64-bit, and then unzip it and you're ready to go!
cd ~/Downloads tar -xvf pooler-cpuminer-2.3.2-linux-x86.tar.gz 
The executable is called minerd and it will be in ~/Downloads but you can move it to wherever you like. To run it, pull up terminal and do

Common Issues
I ran into this and I've seen others with this problem as well. Everything installs fine but there is a shared library file that isn't where it should be. In fact, it isn't there at all. cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory 
In terminal, do
sudo updatedb locate 
And it will probably return a path /lib/x86_64-linux-gnu. Inside that directory there's a library file called You'll need to make a symlink (aka shortcut) that links to So, assuming you're working with do this
cd /lib/x86_64-linux-gnu sudo ln -s 
Now if you do
ln -l 
You should see -> ./ 
Meaning you've made the symlink. Also, the text for will be blue.

New people please read this. [upvote for visibility please]

I am seeing too many new people come and and getting confused. Litecoin wiki isn't the greatest when it comes to summing up things so I will try to do things as best as I can. I will attempt to explain from what I have learned and answer some questions. Hopefully people smarter than me will also chime in. I will keep this post updated as much as I can.
Litecoin is a type to electronic currency. It is just like Bitcoin but it there are differences. Difference explained here.
If you are starting to mine now chances are that you have missed the Bitcoin mining train. If you really want your time and processing power to not go to waste you should mine LTC because the access to BTC from there is much easier.
Mining. What is it?
Let's get this straight. When making any financial commitment to this be prepared to do it with "throw away" money. Mining is all about the hashrate and is measured in KH/s (KiloHash/sec). Unlike the powerful ASICs (Application Specific Integrated Circuit) that are used to mine bitcoins using hashrates in the GH/s and even TH/s, litecoin mining has only been able to achieve at the very best MH/s. I think the highest I've seen is 130 MH/s so far. Which leads us to our next section.
Mining Hardware
While CPU mining is still a thing it is not as powerful as GPU mining. Your laptop might be able to get 1 a month. However, I encourage you to consult this list first. List of hardware comparison You will find the highest of processors can maybe pull 100 KH/s and if we put this into a litecoin mining calculator it doesn't give us much.
Another reason why you don't want to mine with your CPU is pretty simple. You are going to destroy it.
So this leaves us with GPUs. Over the past few months (and years) the HD 7950 has been the favourite because it drains less power and has a pretty good hashrate. But recently the introduction of the R9 290 (not the x) has changed the game a bit. People are getting 850 KH/s - 900 KH/s with that card. It's crazy.
Should I mine?
Honestly given the current difficulty you can make a solid rig for about $1100 with a hashrate of 1700 KH/s which would give you your investment back in about a month and a half. I am sure people out there can create something for much cheaper. Here is a good example of a setup as suggested by dystopiats

Hardware Fundamentals
CPU - Do you need a powerful CPU? No but make sure it is a decent one. AMD CPUs are cheap to buy right now with tons of power. Feel free to use a Sempron or Celeron depending on what Motherboard you go with.
RAM - Try to get at least 4 GB so as to not run into any trouble. Memory is cheap these days. I am saying 4 GB only because of Windoze. If you are plan to run this on Linux you can even get away with less memory.
HDD Any good ol 7200 RPM hard drive will do. Make sure it is appropriate. No point in buying a 1TB hard drive. Since, this is a newbie's guide I assumed most won't know how to run linux, but incase you do you can get a USB flash drive and run linux from it thus removing the need for hard drive all toghether. (thanks dystopiats)
GPU - Consult the list of hardware of hardware I posted above. Make sure you consider the KH/s/W ratio. To me the 290 is the best option but you can skimp down to 7950 if you like.
PSU - THIS IS BLOODY IMPORTANT. Most modern GPUs are power hungry so please make sure you are well within the limits of your power consumption.
MOTHERBOARD - Ok, so a pretty popular board right now is Gigabyte GA-990FXA-UD3 and the ASRock 970 Extreme4. Some people are even going for Gigabyte GA-990FXA-UD5 and even the mighty Gigabyte GA-990FXA-UD7 because it has more PCI-E slots. 6 to be exact. However you may not need that much. With risers you can get more shoved into less.
PCI-E RISERS - These are called risers. They come in x16 to x16 and x1 to x16 connections. Here is the general rule of thumb. This is very important. Always get a POWERED riser otherwise you will burn a hole in your MoBo. A powered rise as a molex connector so that additional power from PSU can be supplied.
When it comes to hardware I've provided the most basic knowledge you need. Also, take a look at cryptobader's website. This is very helpful. Please visit the mining section of Litecoin Forums and the litecoinmining subreddit for more indepth info.
Mining Software
Now that you have assembled your hardware now you need to get into a pool. But before you do that you need a mining software. There are many different ones but the one that is most popular is cgminer. Download it and make sure you read the README. It is a very robust piece of software. Mining Pools
Now that your hardware and software is ready. I know nothing about solo mining other than the fact that you have to be very lucky and respectable amount of hashing power to decrypt a block. So it is better to join pools. I have been pool hopping for a bit and really liked give-me-coin previously known to the community as give-me-ltc. They have a nice mobile app and 0% pool fees. This is really a personal preference. Take a look at this list and try some yourself.
How do I connect to a pool?
Most pools will give you a tutorial on how to but the basics are as follows:
  • Signup for a pool
  • Create a worker for your account. Usually one worker per rig (Yes people have multiple rigs) is generally a good idea.
  • Create a .run file. Open up notepad and type cgminer.exe -o (address_to_the_miningpool:port_number) -u (yourusername.workername) -p (your_worker_password_if_you_made_one). Then File>Save As> (Make sure the drop down is set to "All Files" and .txt document.) and save in the same folder as cgminer. That's it.
  • Double click on (or whatever you named it) and have fun mining.
Mining Profitability
This game is not easy. If it was, practically everyone would be doing it. This is strictly a numbers game and there are calculations available that can help you determine your risk on your investments. 4 variables you need to consider when you are starting to mine:
Hardware cost: The cost of your physical hardware to run this whole operation.
Power: Measured in $/KwH is also known as the operating cost.
Difficulty rate: To put it in layman's terms the increase in difficulty is inversely proportional to amount of coin you can mine. The harder the difficulty the harder it is to mine coin. Right now difficulty is rising at about 18% per 3 days. This can and will change since all you miners are soon going to jump on the band wagon.
Your sanity: I am not going to tell you to keep calm and chive on because quiet frankly that is stupid. What I will tell you not to get too carried away. You will pull you hair out. Seriously.
Next thing you will need is a simple tool. A mining profitability calculator. I have two favourite ones.
I like this one cause it is simple. The fields are self explanatory. Try it.
I like this one because it is a more real life scenario calculator and more complicated one (not really). It also takes increasing difficulty into account.

Bitcoin -> LiteCoin, increase hashing?!

Hey all, recently got into my old bitcoin acct which has a total of 7.83usd in there now with the big spike! And I wanted to transfer that over to LiteCoin if possible. Any services that would do that free?
Also -- am mining Litecoin now but it seems to be going slow -- 8 threads but each at around 8-10khash/s any way to improve this? I remember mining bitcoin with this machine and it was much faster. Using cgminer and coinotron - would litecoinpool be better? And based on my rates I feel I should do a PPS worker, thoughts? Just want to maximize this machine. Thanks all!

Questions about getting started mining

Hello all, I want to star mining potcoin but I've been having some problems.
First I cannot get my wallet to connect to any servers to update the block chain. I've put the correct server list in the configuration file and put it in my useroaming/potcoin folder.
I was able to get the bootstrap to update but that only got me half way updated. I've opened up my firewall on my pc for potcoin.exe both in and out.
This may be a firewall issue for my router, even tho I have Upnp enabled. Dose anyone know what ports the wallet runs on?
Second I have 2 radon r900 series graphic cards in my pc. I've tried cgminer that is the latest version to support gpu processing and sgminer. I'm mining with pool. No matter what I do I can not connect to the pool.
I've mined bitcoins in the past and never had any of these problems.
I just bought a Gridseed Blade Scrypt Asic - 5.5MHs miner and will be hooking it up to a raspberry pi with the tutorial provided by
If anyone has any tips for getting my pc working, ide be very great full.

Trying to set up RPi to mine bitcoin using Block Erupters, but nothing seems to be working correctly

Hey guys, so I'm trying to use my RPi (B+ model) to set up a rudimentary bitcoin mining rig, but nothing seems to work correctly. I've tried using cgminer on Raspbian Jessie, but cgminer seems to refuse to use the miner. Nothing shows up when I check my hash rate on Slushpool's website, the current pool I'm using. I have another microSD that I set up with minepeon, but every time I try to plug in my Block erupter (which is a dualminer Litecoin/Bitcoin miner), it keeps telling me that I don't have permissions to access the USB port that they are plugged into. I've googled various things and I keep getting closer to it actually working, but it still isn't showing any hash rate. Anyone tried something similar and had problems?
tl;dr: Using RPi B+ to mine via ASIC block erupters, both with Raspbian Jessie and cgminer, and with minepeon, neither work correctly. Help?

mining with ATI Radeon HD 5700 series

I have been getting into the bitcoin frenzy finally and started looking into ways in which I can start out. I'm not the usual n00b since I have everything up and working. Only thing that I am having problems with are the performance issues. I have my Catalyst drivers installed and running and the Radeon is working like it should but at a lower speed than I expected from what I have read about others using this same card series. When I use guiminer with the slush pool, I get at least 80 kH/s, when mining litecoin with guiminer scrypt, I get more performance at 200 kH/s. both less than what I had expected. This is all in windows. When I give it a go in Linux with cgminer, the program doesn't even see the card, apparently it seems to be checking the usb hub instead of rhe PCI and PCI express ports. Is there a way to make cgminer look into the pci slots instead of only checking the usb ports. I can always use a USB asic miner from a company like butterfly labs but I have heard not only negative feedback about not only the performance but also the price in which they are sold for and how it's time consuming to get it to pay you back the extremely large amount of money that you spent on them in the first place. Can I get my Radeon card to mine faster in windows, and how can I get it recognized in Linux by cgminer. This is getting really frustrating, and bitcoin jobs are more competitive than actual jobs. If it's relavent, I only get internet bandwith at 2Mb/s which i think is a major contributing factor but I've been told it isn't.

Capped Pay Per Share with Recent Backpay Reward System We didn't find something else longer to spell. You may have already seen this reward system currently live on the Bitcoin mining pool Eligius. To be short : it's a system that tries to be close of the classic PPS reward system. The main difference is : the pool pays the miners with the solved blocks funds. The pool doesn't take risks on short/long rounds. When a round's unlucky and the pool can't pay anymore for the work, we shelve your shares for further backpay. Just Started Litecoin Mining!

Okay so I've had my ubuntu server storage/plex/torrents/ftp/website running for a few years now, and I always wanted to jump in to bitcoin but you know that never happened... especially with the current difficulty.
Anyway on the weekend I ventured out and bought myself 2x 7950's and added them to my server. After a back up and fresh install of ubuntu server 13.10, with the current amd beta drivers, (and quick restore of all my previous settings bring the server back to its former glory) I started messing with cgminer settings and bla bla bla, and I've been testing different pools, and I've settled on coinhuntr over mine-litecoin (for some reason mine-litecoin just doesnt report the correct hash rate that cgminer is reporting... at least for me) and yeah its been only a few days and I've got 3 litecoins so far
I'm pretty happy, mostly excited at how well its all just working for me, I mean I havn't completely maxed out the hash rate of the cards yet, they are sitting 1098 avg, but there is no impact on my server, plex still streams, deluge still downloads... flexget still flexgets, I can still ftp to my storage from uni, and yeah.
only thing I'm working on is a init.d script to run at a delayed time (giving everything else the opportunity to boot before mining starts) in the even that power fails long enough and my ups goes out (its a 3000va ups so i dont think thats gonna happen any time soon :P ) but you know, my family that im still living with, dad understands that my server is best for the network when its on :P
but yeah, thats sorta what I wanted to share and yeah, I suppose im welcoming myself to the community :P
edit: I forgot to mention, My wallet Im keeping on an encrpyted ubuntu VM, and then that vm is kept on a true crypt drive and I have multiple usb's of this partition and you know, a pile of memorized paraphrases... yeah i know perhaps a bit over the top, but I've read so many horror stories of people loosing their bitcoins, can't say I want say the next 5 years of litecoin being taken from me... you know for example Anyone else got some over the top wallet protection stories?

[Q] Is it still possible for someone with a decent GPU to mine Litecoin with a profit?

Hey guys,
So I recently started reading into the whole cryptocurrency thing, and thought I might give it a try.
Now bitcoin is obviously not an option anymore for someone with no dedicated gear for mining, but it seems Litecoin might still be.
What I have : Desktop PC with 4th gen core i5 CPU, AMD 270X GPU, and 8 GB or RAM.
Electricity in my country is fairly cheap, and I think it will not be a problem.
Is it worth it to start mining? pool or solo?
In addition - I've looked into some guides about starting and read about cgminer and guiminer. But it seems the guide was pretty outdated, so I would like to ask if there are guides you recommend for a starting miner to read, that are still relevant today.

A love note to the Dogecoin community

Two weeks ago I knew nothing about Dogecoin. Sure, I had heard of Bitcoin and Litecoin, but I really didn't know anything about them or how they worked. I didn't own cryptocurrency of any kind, and felt that I had "missed the boat." I felt that anyone who was going to participate in cryptocurrencies in a significant way was already a player. I was an outsider.
A funny thing happened ten days ago. I ran across an article about an insignificant coin that was based on a meme that was created as a joke. The strange thing about it was how it wouldn't go away. Dogecoin refused to die. So, I cruised over to Reddit, and found this community. Even though I had no experience with mining, I was quickly able to get my low-end GPU cranking out 70 KH/s with the help of the how-to's on this subreddit.
I'm not going to lie: the Greed Monster within me did rear his ugly head near the beginning. "If I could only hoard X amount of coins," I thought to myself, "I could just wait for this to take off, and make some serious money." However, the more I read, learned and participated the more I viewed the contents of my wallet as a means to contribute.
I think the first real turn for me came early on when my oldest son asked me what I was doing on the computer (setting up cgminer). I explained cryptocurrencies and Dogecoin to the best of my ability, and, within an hour, he had set up his own desktop to cpu mine. I sent Đ500 to his wallet which was half of all my Doge at the time. It was amazing, and a little crazy, to watch the fever spread firsthand.
I am but a poor shibe. I can't afford to buy millions of Dogecoin, but I am not dissuaded. I shall continue to mine even in the face of the block reward halving in a couple of weeks. I will continue to participate on this board, and find other ways to contribute to the greater community. I'm glad that I found this place, and I want to see it succeed because I believe it is like no other. The degree of inclusiveness, helpfulness and goodwill here never cease to amaze me. By contrast, I did some searches on various Bitcoin boards yesterday, and I was shocked how often people were unable to help newer people because they saw no direct benefit in it. Quite a departure from the collective attitude on this, and related subreddits.
So, to the other members of this community, I would like to send my sincere gratitude. Two weeks ago I was an outsider, but today I am a shibe.

Linux headless setup

I'm setting up a mining rig using 3-7950's, and have ran into a little bit of a road block. I've seen a few guides using xubuntu 12.10, but none with xubuntu 13.04.

I've tried the first 2 ways on fresh images, but for some reason X never starts...
aticonfig --adapter=0 --od-getclocks ERROR - X needs to be running to perform AMD Overdrive(TM) commands 
Following the darth_bunny's guide way I built to 13.04 instead of 12.10
./ --buildpkg Ubuntu/raring 
On a side note, whenever I plug the ATI cards in, video (connected to onboard), does not output. I'm guessing this is because the ATI cards are primary? It didn't bother me as I ssh in anyway.
I also have some missing lib's when trying to run cgminer, but that is something to worry about later.
Has anyone solved this on 13.04, or should I just downgrade to 12.10?

Software Review: CGWatcher by Justin Malone

I've been using it for over a month and let me tell ya about it: CGWatcher.
So basically, you can run CGMiner and sometimes it'll crash. Sometimes if a GPU card gets above 100 C, it will not only blue-screen my machine (spontaneous shut-down), it will actually lose the 2nd GPU (something 'snaps' with the drivers). In the past 24 hours, I have reinstalled windows about 8 times or so.
Tools like CGWatcher have become essential. Another reason would be that if overheat is detected in CGMiner, it will shut down the GPU, then re-enable it after the target temperature is reached (on my machine 75 or 85 C), but wait!!! Did I say that CGMiner would re-enable the GPU? Because in reality, it only says it re-enabled the GPU, and it will just sit there at 0.0 hash rate. Until you restart it.
Tools like CGWatcher therefore have become essential to litecoin and bitcoin miners.
Earlier versions of CGWatcher didn't switch back and forth from litecoin to bitcoin mining easily. I do not think this was a software issue, I believe that you have to use CGMiner to output your Config File, then choose that in CGWatcher. If you try to add scrypt mining from inside CGWatcher, it didn't seem to work well.
Whatever it was, now it is no longer a problem (again, if it ever was) to switch from litecoin to bitcoin mining.
The developer has made a lot of look and feel improvements, and as we speak it actually seems to be adjusting difficulty automatically (although I didn't configure it, I'm sure it's in a config page somewhere and isn't entirely unwelcome just yet -- it's just a surprise).
I left anonymous feedback to the guy to OPEN SOURCE IT. DAMMIT. This is 2013, and things should be open-sourced, so that other developers can make their improvements. However, this is a free country, and I am using it, and it seems to be working great. Though y'all might like to give it a whirl yourselves.

Plan B: BAMT Live USB
This option is a last resort, hopefully not necessary. Download BAMT from the link below and "dd" via terminal to USB formatted to FAT32 in gparted. You can install gparted in xubuntu by typing:
sudo apt-get install gparted 
Next, launch gparted and format your USB drive. Be careful not to format your HDDs! You might double-check the storage sizes as a reference in the upper-right drop-down menu.

Extract the file and locate "litecoinbamt1.1.img"
Put image on 2GB or greater USB formatted to FAT32 by opening terminal and running:
sudo dd if=/path/to/litecoinbamt1.1.img of=/dev/sdX (The "X" is the device name of your usb key. The one you will have seen in gparted, for example "sdb, or sdc, or sdd..." Try to get the right device on the first try. Use raw device *not* a partition.) sudo dd if=(you can drag and drop file into the terminal here to get the path) of=/dev/sdX

So I have two 7950s, and alone they get ~490 Mh/s (which still seems low), and when they're both running I get a *total* of ~530 Mh/s. What am I doing wrong?

I am using the following cgminer configuration:
./cgminer -o -O januszeal.x:x --verbose --auto-fan -I 14 -g 2 -w 256 --shaders 1792 
Possibly related, I have the same issue with mining litecoin.
Edit: If anyone has the same issue as me, INSTALL THE OFFICIAL AMD DRIVERS. My problems are now solved.

Need help with gridseed in Linux

I just recieved the gridseed ASIC miner in the mail. I have successfully gotten it to mine litecoin in linux with cgminer. But unfortunately I haven't gotten it working with bitcoin. I am mining from slush pool and don't start telling me that it's not worth it. I didn't expect it to be, I'm just a hobbyist. I have the cgminer command written down. I have cgminer recognizing the gridseed device, I just cant get it to show that it has connected and start displaying the status of it's mining job. I can do it with ltcrabbit and hypernova but I am unable to mine bitcoin from slush pool. Here is the command I used
cgminer -o stratum+tcp:// -u baronobeefdip.worker1 -p ****
Nothing is working, I want to know how I can make it communicate with the pool. I did download a special version of cgminer that was compatible with the gridseed device so I think it might need some updating. As for the device itself, the drivers for the console should be already in the kernel. I am thinking that there is more to be done here when it comes to bitcoin, I understand it's an entirely different animal and one cannot switch inbetween the two.

[SMT] Python script that will display my mining stats onto a RPi Char LCD Plate

I am sorry if this isn't the right subreddit to ask this. I did do a search but I only found C programmers for hire and a general for hire. If this isn't the right place, any point in the right direction would be greatly appreciated.
I have always and still do have an interest in Python and would love to learn how to write said language. Usually, with the help of google I can make small projects happen by my lonesome. However, this time I cannot and I'd like to leave it to an expert because I'd like this working soon.
So heres what I'm looking for; I need a script to run my 16x2 Character LCD plate that I have on my RPi B+ which is running Minera. Which if you're not familiar it is a BTC/LTC mining interface that keeps stats and such. I'd like the LCD to be able to show certain sections of criteria (hashrate, temp, rejected, accepted, runtime, etc) and be able to cycle through screens using the direction pad on the Pi's LCD plate. If I'm not completely wrong, that should all be able to be pulled from a local JSON file that displays every strings(?) value. So I'd like to think this wouldn't be a very challenging task for someone who knows a thing or two about Python.
I have tried to use other scripts as references but I have yet to find anything familiar enough or anybody generous enough to help. I have analysed the PiMiner cgminer script that displays stats but its completely different as far as I can tell. I also don't want stats from just one mining script I need the stats as a whole that Minera shows.
