I am stepping down as a moderator of r/btc and exiting the bitcoin community and entering the Ethereum community.

I am stepping down as a moderator of btc and exiting the bitcoin community. Thank you all for fighting until the end. I know I am going to get a lot of hate from pretty much everyone for this post, but I felt the need to post it anyway.

Why Give Up?

I think bitcoin is past the point of no return. There are a number of different routes that bitcoin could take this year, and as far as I can see, they all end up at the same destination; failure. I know I am going to get a lot of flack for this post, and I understand that. I have witnessed bitcoin being announced “dead” many many times throughout its history and I absolutely could be wrong, but almost every one of their predictions were based on a lack of understanding of bitcoin. I don’t feel my prediction is has a lack of understanding. If I am wrong, then I feel it will be through sheer luck that bitcoin survives. I was a bitcoin early adopter in 2011 and have invested far more time into bitcoin than is reasonable. I truly hope bitcoin does survive, but what I think will happen is not predicated on what I want to happen.

How might bitcoin fall?

The Past

I am not going to go through everything that has lead us up to this point. Many of your are well aware of what has brought us here. Bitcoin up until the beginning of 2014 was an unparalleled success. For those of you who weren’t around at the time, there was a huge amount of excitement in the community at all times. It felt like every month there was some announcement that had a positive impact on bitcoin. A new major company offering bitcoin payments, a bitcoin company offering a new service, a new piece of software being added to clients to make them more useful. Bitcoin was making continual progress and the community was unified. Compare the situation back then to day. We have now had 2 years of stagnation, and in many cases degradation of the network.

The Present

The network is now slow and expensive (and getting slower and more expensive), companies have been leaving bitcoin at an exponential rate. No new major companies have adopted bitcoin and there are no signs of this changing in the future. The community is irreparably divided and is at war with itself. Development has stalled.
Where bitcoin has stalled, other cryptocurrencies have been making enormous ground. Bitcoin does not exist in a vacuum. It has competition. Other cryptocurrencies already offer significantly more advance features than bitcoin. The only thing bitcoin has left over other cryptocurrencies is it’s network effect. The inertia of network effect is truly enormous. Bitcoin has been coasting on it for 2 years now. Technology develops rapidly though, and many people are always looking for the next big thing. Investors want to make money and developers want to work on the most advance and growing technology. There has been very little investment into new bitcoin specific companies over the past 2 years. The only new bitcoin company I know of that has received significant investment in the past two years is Blockstream. There has been a very large amount of investment into blockchain companies in general though. The money is there, it’s just not going into bitcoin.
Ethereum has now reached close to 1/3 of bitcoin’s market cap and there is no sign that it is going to let up any time soon. The ethereum community is a breath of fresh air compared to the current bitcoin community and it feels very nostalgic there. It feels very much like the bitcoin community did 3-4 years ago. They have showed that they are not afraid of using hard forks to upgrade the protocol. They have a leader who is intelligent, pragmatic and good at communicating and IMO who is likely to get the network through the early volatile years. The community showed that they value pragmatism and reality over ideology when they stopped a theft of a large percentage of the currency supply and did so without having any adverse affects on anyone other than the thief. They also achieved this while under attack from bitcoin. They have been working with major organisations and companies to promote and forward the use of the network and they listen to the users of the network to find out what problems they have and which features they want, and then work towards satisfying the needs of their users. The developers of the network have known large holdings of the currency, which means conflicts of interest are less likely to arise and protocol development can directly correlate increased returns for the developer’s investment.

The Future

There are a number of possibilities, but I believe all end with very similar outcomes.

Scenario 1 - BU/EC gains 75% of the network hash rate

If BU gains 75% of the network hash rate, a hard fork will become likely (although not certain). Core and their supporters will start to try and burn down the network. All communication channels will overflow with FUD (some real, some fake). Core supporters with large bitcoin holdings will start dumping them on the market in ways that will cause the most damage to price. Core will start recommending at the very minimum a difficulty readjustment and quite likely also a POW change. Price will fall extremely far as speculators adjust their risk exposure and wait out the storm, traders will short the market to make as much money as possible during the fall, and core supporters try to get the BTC price to go as low as possible on the BU/EC side of the fork and BU/EC supporters try to get the price to BCC price to go as low as possible. Whatever the price is before the fork is certain, I think it is likely to reach 50% of that between the time a fork becomes certain and when the fork actually happens. After the fork happens the price could go down to literally any level. While this is happening, the Ethereum market cap is going to overtake bitcoin even if the Ethereum price does not increase (which it will). Bitcoin will not survive this. The moment Ethereum overtakes bitcoin as the biggest cryptocurrency, everyone will find out. It will be posted in articles in every technology news website on the internet. Once the casual bitcoin holders/users find out (hint most do not even pay attention to what is going on in bitcoin) they will quickly panic and either sell to fiat, or sell into Ethereum to speculate. Mining will almost instantly become unprofitable at that point. Monumentally unprofitable in fact. The payout of 12.5 per block will not even slightly cover the cost of electricity and because miners have no direct control over the price of bitcoin they will be absolutely powerless to do anything other than mine at a loss for a very long period of time. If bitcoin price drops to $100, which IMO is very conservative, then it is likely that 90% of the miners will have to turn their hardware off. This means that the difficulty adjustment periods will increase by a factor of 10 to 20 weeks. These miners that are left will need to mine at a huge loss for up to 20 weeks, or hope that somehow the price recovers. I don’t think even the biggest miners could survive that. Further difficulty reset hard forks will be proposed and it will be chaos.
While all of this is happening, Ethereum is likely to be running fine and price will likely be rising significantly as money from bitcoin pours into it.

Scenario 2 - BU/EC never gains 75% of the network hash rate

In this scenario there will be absolutely stalemate. Core will not be able to implement Segwit and therefore will not be able to change bitcoin into a settlement network, but also the transaction throughput will not be increased through larger blocks. The debate will have become so vitriolic that no further progress can be made within bitcoin. Bitcoin simply will not scale on OR off-chain. In this scenario the end is not so violent like in scenario 1 but then end result is the same. Ethereum (and other cryptocurrencies in general) will continue to gain market share throughout the year as Bitcoin remains stuck in stalemate. The bitcoin price continues decreasing and the Ethereum price keeps on increasing until Ethereum overtakes bitcoin. Once the flip happens, it will accelerate significantly as people realise what is happening. The end result is the same as the later part of scenario 1.

Scenario 3 - BU/EC lose most/all of the network hash rate

In this scenario Core manages to get Segwit accepted by the network. Most people in btc simply leave bitcoin for good. Fees will remain high and transaction throughput low. Core will not increase the block size limit until after LN has been proven to work and users have been forced/coerced into using it. LN is not anywhere near ready for production and it is likely to take at least 2 more years until it is released and working and another year or two until it is fully implemented into wallets, and then another year until businesses are able to understand and use it in their backend. I.e. in an ideal world where everything works as intended in this theoretical system it will take 4-5 years until bitcoin has similar properties to what it had 2 years ago. This obviously ignores the fact that there has been no analysis on whether this would even work on an economic level, let alone a technological level.
As transaction fees rise users and business will be pushed into using other cryptocurrencies and fiat and at some point bitcoin’s network effect will be overcome by Ethereum’s. This scenario is essentially the same as scenario 3, but there maybe some initial price pump when Segwit activates and people enjoy and end to the debate. This will likely be short lived though.

What is most likely to happen (IMO)

If BU/EC is to continue to gain further market share of the hash rate and reach the 75% requirement that many parties have suggested. It is likely to take at least a couple more months of deliberations. For this to happen, a number of large pools will need to switch over. Bitfury has stated that they will not support BU and are mining Segwit and have even started mining UASF blocks. HaoBTC is still sticking to the HK agreement (which literally no one else is) and will not be running anything other than Core. This means it is really down to F2Pool and some of the smaller Pools. F2Pool has stated that it will stop signalling for classic and there is no indication that it will start signalling for anything other than Core (not segwit), and has stated that he thinks BU is dead.
This suggests that the most likely scenario is scenario 2. BU/EC will not activate, but nor will Segwit. There are some things that may or may not happen in this scenario. For example it seems that Core are willing to do a UASF to push Segwit through under the pretence that any of the miners that are not mining Segwit are illegitimate as they are against the “consensus”. This will force the miners into making some kind of decision either way. Many are likely to side with Core but I think a significant portion will side with BU initially. A number of different things could happen in this scenario depending on the ratio of hash power on each side of the split. If the split is mostly equal, I expect that two coins will survive for some amount of time. What happens with bitcoin from that point I have no idea. If BU/EC gains the most hash power then the debate will rage on as the BU/EC will refuse to attack the minority chain out of moral reasons. What happens with bitcoin from that point I have no idea. If Core gains the majority share then the BU minority chain will be attacked by some of the majority miners. Core and their supporters do not have any moral objections against this kind of attack. The minority BU miners will then switch back to Core and it will likely play out like in scenario 3.

So this is BU’s fault for forcing a hard fork?

No, this is Core’s fault by making a hard fork dangerous by telling everyone a hard fork is dangerous for the past two years and blocking every conceivable compromise. They have petrified the bitcoin community and convinced them that any kind of hard fork for any reason that does not come from them is dangerous. They have done this to hold onto the power they should not even have in the first place. They have become the self appointed kings of bitcoin. They have achieved this by threatening to burn down the network instead of making a compromise, and by attacking anyone who threatens to take this power away from them. Unfortunately, when Gavin stepped down, he handed to keys to the bitcoin house to the wolves and once they are inside, it seems it is not possible to get them out again. The only way to make them totally irrelevant is to exit and let them be kings of nothing.

Why did you even become a mod in the first place?

I have known bitcoin was on a negative trajectory for quite some time but I felt that one last push to save it was worth my effort. I wanted to help btc be the best bitcoin subreddit to overcome some of the damage that bitcoin has done to the community. IMO btc is the best bitcoin subreddit, but it is far from perfect. I feel very strongly that the moderation of btc is a microcosm of the situation in the bitcoin community in general. I feel there is far too much weight put on idealogical decision making rather pragmatism and realism. The moderation policies of btc are ‘hands-off’ to a point I think is actually detrimental to the sub and to bitcoin. The issue is that, trolls overwhelm the sub and cause constant controversy. They act like a fire under the community and purposely rile everyone up. There is a reason for this. bitcoin was controlled mostly through censorship. Censorship alone was enough to create an echo chamber. They do not have control of the btc moderation team (well actually they managed to get two mods on here who have since left/been removed) so they must turn it into an echo-chamber by other means. They have achieved this by making sure every single post has comments from trolls that try to rile up the community. This makes the btc community have more tunnel vision as they/we try to insulate ourselves from the trolls. The problem is that it means that the community becomes highly idealogical and focused on only one goal.
IMO it is a failure of this sub to not remove comments from trolls. This is pretty much a standard policy across the whole of reddit and the only reasons for not employing it are idealogical. Removing trolling is not the same as banning specific ideas or topics being genuinely discussed. Not doing so just makes btc a frustrating place to try and discuss things. It also means that any actual discussions outside the block size debate get very little traction as everyone gets dragged into the angry posts.
I should be clear though, the other mods of this sub are great and absolutely want what is best for bitcoin.

Isn’t this all just FUD

I am not writing this to sway anyone. This is what I genuinely think will happen, but of course I could be wrong about every single prediction. It saddens me enormously to write this. The current trajectory for Bitcoin is down and the the trajectory for Ethereum and other cryptocurrencies is up. There will likely be people who say “but Ethereum doesn’t have any uses cases”, my argument to that is; what use-cases does bitcoin have right now that could not immediately be adopted by Ethereum today? There will also be people who say “but if bitcoin dies then all other cryptocurrencies will die with it, because how could anyone trust their money if it might just disappear”? My argument to that is; all cryptocurrencies are still in their infancy, even bitcoin. The writing has been on the wall for Bitcoin for quite some time. I do think there will likely be one ‘great’ cryptocurrency, but until that cryptocurrency is adopted by the masses, that title is still available. If the title of ‘biggest cryptocurrency’ can be taken then it was likely never meant to have it very long anyway. If/When a cryptocurrency manages to achieve mass adoption then it will have hundreds of millions of people, companies, organisations and even countries defending it. At that point the entire system will be working towards it’s success. At that point, the current moral ambivalence towards attacking a minority chain will be seen as ridiculous. After mass adoption of a cryptocurrency (for example Ethereum) has occurred, grandma’s will be writing to their local MP in support of the cyberwar against the Ethereum competitor ‘Othereum’. That is decentralisation. Huge numbers of diverse entities working to defend it. This will never happen on a network as limited as bitcoin’s is. In fact bitcoin is actively losing allies.

TL/DR

I’m out. Ethereum is likely to take over this year as bitcoin becomes myspace. This may happen very rapidly. I hope I am wrong.

Disclosure:

I hold both Bitcoin and Ethereum. I have held a number of different cryptocurrencies over the years, but my holdings were almost always 90-100% bitcoin until recently.

Hi Everyone!

We’re excited to be able to call AIOMiner, the best miner on the planet!

First of all, thank you so much for all of your support over this past year! Your constant suggestions in Discord have helped make AIOMiner what it is today and we are endlessly grateful!
If you haven’t yet, here are some quick links to get involved with AIOMiner:

Humble Beginnings

If you’re not familiar with AIOMiner, we were born right here on /gpumining. Almost exactly one year ago, xixspiderxix became frustrated with the lack of functionality, ugliness, and the high difficulty required to get started with the already existing miners. Originally, he was just going to make it for himself to enhance his own mining experience, but others started asking for access to the software, suggesting new features, and helping him improve. So, he opened it up to the public for free and AIOMiner was born. And to this day, we maintain our promise that mining with AIOMiner will always be free. You can read more about it here, but let’s get to the good stuff!

What’s New in AIOMiner?

We now have remote rig monitoring and control through our website! We’ve just enabled the AIOMiner application to connect to the AIOMiner website through an API and fixed some bugs. If you’ve never used AIOMiner before, here are some of the features you can expect on the software side of things:

The biggest part of the update is a full rebuild of AIOMiner.com. We're bringing you remote control of your rigs via the AIOMiner website so you can stop paying for services, like Teamviewer, and manage all of your rigs from anywhere you have an internet connection!

Here's what you can expect from AIOMiner.com:
Whew! That's a lot, but believe it or not... we're just getting started! We still have plenty planned to maximize your rig efficiency, control, and profitability.

All of my favorite miners?

If not all of them, then certainly a good chunk of your favorites and we make sure they are updated daily!

Q: How many cryptocurrencies does that cover?
A: ¯\(ツ)/¯ We stopped counting when we reached 1,000.

Is it safe?

Of course, but don't take it from us! Here's a 3rd party analysis on the software:

What's Free Hash Friday?

Every week we put on an event called Free Hash Friday, and don’t call the DEA because we're not giving away weed! Maybe Canada can help you with that, but here's the general rundown for Free Hash Friday:
The AIOMiner team sends out a tweet every week with directions in an image, such as this one.
Follow the directions in the tweet where it says "To Win" with the arrows. Once you've completed those three steps, your twitter handle will be inputted into a spreadsheet (that is shared with the public) and you'll be assigned a number in the order that you're inputted.
You have until 8pm US Pacific Time (GMT -7) to enter. At 8pm, the spreadsheet will be updated one final time and the drawing will begin immediately in the AIOMiner discord channel.
You'll notice on the spreadsheet that you have a number next to your twitter handle. We have a bender bot that is able to generate a random number given the upper and lower limit. If your number is the randomly generated number, you win!
Typically we pair with a coin, as you can see, who puts up some to giveaway and we have multiple winners. If we don't have a coin to give away, The AIOMiner team will simply start mining on behalf of the winner for 24 hours and mine any gpu-mineable coin of their choice.
And that's pretty much it! So, follow our twitter and be on the lookout for the next Free Hash Friday!

What else should I know about AIOMiner?

We are fully committed to keeping mining free for everyone, but it does cost some money to keep the servers up and running. So, we're planning on releasing some "premium" features in the near future that will take the mining experience to the next level. Until December 1st, we will allow users to donate/purchase a lifetime premium account. With this account you will gain access to AIOMiner and all of the premium features that we release as well as any future product we make for free. This is only for a limited time, so if you're in the mining game for the long haul, it is definitely worth it. After December 1st, we will open up the premium features on a membership/monthly subscription basis. So, get it while it's hot!

Other than that, enjoy the software, enjoy the giveaways and come participate in the community:

Thank you again to everyone who has helped make AIOMiner what it is today!

Happy Mining,
-The AIOMiner Team
Edit: When releasing the new website, Google's Crawler flagged us as experiencing a hostile takeover and as a result, you may get a message warning of malicious content. We checked everything and there is no malware or malicious software on aiominer.com. We are actively working with Google to get this resolved as quickly as we can!

Here's a 3rd party analysis on the software:
https://www.hybrid-analysis.com/sample/e8f518e55783a853659938ed1c25f441acf5c8cf2e7730ce3135f2dd231759b2?environmentId=120

Monumental AIOMiner Update v8.4 - Mine CLO while paying 0% Fees to us, now with free Online Rig Monitoring for your entire farm!

If you’re not familiar with AIOMiner, we were born right here on Reddit(/gpumining).

Here's a 3rd party analysis on the software:
https://www.hybrid-analysis.com/sample/e8f518e55783a853659938ed1c25f441acf5c8cf2e7730ce3135f2dd231759b2?environmentId=120

Severe Cannabis/THC Allergy - 6 week update

Here is a link to the last thread I made, it's very long and has the full history of my symptoms. I'll sum up the important points in this thread. Thank you again to everyone that posted in there, I really appreciate the feedback. It's been about a year now that the reaction is so bad that smoking isn't worth it, and I really want to get through this and find a way to smoke without my body trying to kill me. My quality of life, physical health, and anxiety have all been effected by this.

No wheezing or decreased lung capacity, but immediately after getting high I have difficulty breathing because thick mucus/phlegm is continually pooling in the back of my throat. It’s white so it’s unlikely I have any sort of infection….just an immune response I imagine. I spit it out and spit it out, but it just seems to keep coming. The thicker the mucus, the more trouble I have breathing...if I take Mucinex and do a sinus rinse before smoking and drink herbal tea and eat raw garlic/ginger afterwards its a bit better, but still not great. It seems I can expect to be spitting this stuff out at least once every 5-10 mins for a good 12 hours. Aside from this I have decreased appetite, and some stomach pain. I used to have bloating and urine retention problems but taking probiotics seems to have helped with that.
Oddly enough I also seem to get muscle pain in my lower back and sometimes shoulders from smoking, especially if I'm really high.. If my posture isn’t absolutely perfect then I’m in a lot of pain, I've even had my hands trembling once before.

Things I am considering trying
Update
Unfortunately, I'm still having some troubles. Since my last post I went another few weeks without smoking at all, but then a trusted friend came through with some of what he told me was the cleanest BHO he has ever made, so I gave that a try. The first time I tried it I did a sinus rinse before hand and tried to get as much mucus out as possible, since if I DO have the reaction it will get very thick and give me trouble breathing.
I tried a very small amount of the BHO and got higher than I've been in a year, it was nice for an hour or so, but then the reaction started to come on a bit stronger. Still it wasn't too bad, it was nice being high again.
The next day however I had more mucus/post-nasal drip than usual, and I tried smoking again (before doing a sinus rinse) and I realized immediately that it was a terrible mistake. I ended up standing in a hot shower for an hour trying to use steam to thin mucus so I could breathe. I probably should have used my epi pen and/or gone to the hospital...it got pretty scary.
So, I think this rules out the allergy being to the plant material. It looks like it may be an actual Cannabinoid, maybe THC? I came across a study published two weeks ago by the Indian Journal of Allergy, Asthma, and Immunology about Cannabis allergy. It's mostly about pollenation troubles but it discusses how some people can have a THC allergy, here's the study: http://www.ijaai.in/article.asp?issn=0972-6691;year=2013;volume=27;issue=2;spage=143;epage=146;aulast=Kumar
Does anyone know where I could go to receive testing and then immunotherapy for an IgE specific Cannabis/THC? allergy? I'm starting to think that's my best option, but I've looked into it and I can't find any answers. The allergist I used to go to wasn't very helpful at all. I live in Baltimore, but would be more than happy to go to Colorado or Washington or somewhere like that if they offered such a thing. I feel like someone, somewhere has to be doing this...it would raise my quality of life so much if I could just get rid of this allergy.
Again, if you actually read through all of that I'm very thankful, this is an awesome community. If anyone is able to give me any helpful advice or point me to a study I could sign up for I'd gladly send some bitcoins your way.

Cannabis allergy/autoimmune troubles, looking for advice

I made this post in /drugs yesterday and didn't get much of a response, but was told this may be a better subreddit for it.
Foreword: This is a lot of text, enough to warrant a foreword. I don’t actually expect everyone to read this whole thing, but I wanted to be as thorough as possible in case someone does think they can offer any advice, and because this has been bothering me for a long time now. I will happily, happily send bitcoins to anyone who is able to help me out here, even if you can just point me to a person or resource that COULD be more helpful.
Also please don’t post an ignorant response along the lines of “weed is good for you, you can’t be allergic to it”. I love weed, it has helped with my anxiety and increased my quality of life quite a bit over the past few years and I miss it a lot, which is the whole reason I’m posting this. I realize my situation is very rare, but clearly people CAN have negative physical reactions to it.
Timeline:
24+ months ago: I had no health problems or history of health problems at this point. I had probably smoked weed a dozen or two times in my life and was physically fit and active. My weight hasn’t changed at any point in all of this, I’m about 6’0” 165 lbs, white male. I was 22 then, 24 now.
12-24 months ago: I started smoking with friends around this time, and this is when I started to notice something wasn’t quite right. I would experience a bit of wheezing some of the times I smoked with friends, they thought it was weird but no one thought much of it. I thought it was strange too since I hadn’t experienced it the other times I’d smoked, and at first I thought I may just be sensitive to smoke in my lungs or heat or something along those lines, so I bought my first vaporizer and started smoking on my own here and there. On average during this time period I probably smoked 2-4 times a week, usually at night.
As time went on the wheezing started to happen EVERY time that I smoked. I would buy Ricola cough drops and always suck on one as I vaped, since it seemed to help a bit, but then it got to the point where I was experiencing wheezing for a day or two after smoking, as well as anytime I went for a run. After a month or two of this I had what I suppose you could call an asthma attack after taking a big hit, I had a lot of trouble breathing and it scared me quite a bit. The next day I was wheezing very badly so I went to a Patient First (Urgent Care center in the US) and they gave me a rescue inhaler and set me up with an appointment with an allergist.
6-12 Months ago: I had my first appointment with the allergist and was completely up front with him about everything. Honestly, this guy was pretty cool. I told him I thought I was allergic to weed and he told me I could eat it but not to smoke it anymore. Later that week I made a batch of brownies with some friends and gave it a shot and unfortunately, it didn’t go so well. I’m not exaggerating when I say that I almost died, I used my rescue inhaler far more times than you’re supposed to and the night ended with me laying outside gasping for fresh air. Not a pleasant experience for anyone involved, I felt bad for my friends for having to deal with that on an otherwise really pleasant night.
I told the allergist about this the next time I saw him and he was surprised, he said he had never heard of someone actually being allergic to cannabis in his 20 years of experience. I asked him what my options were, if there was anything that I could do to stop the reaction, be it before, during, or after smoking, and he told me there really wasn’t much. He could start me on Immunization shots if they existed, but cannabis is illegal and not a common allergy so they don’t. He said caffeine could help with Asthma so I started drinking coffee every morning. He recommended that I stop smoking at this point and gave me a prescription for Singulair and a nasal spray, so I started taking those every day as well as antihistamines. It’s worth noting that I started having other allergies at this point too (previously I had none). Weed was the only one that gave me asthma symptoms but dust mites and mold would also bother me.
I did a lot of experimenting with different things that could help around this time, you can read about them below. Unfortunately, none really worked. Oh, I also started doing daily sinus rinses around this time since I got a couple of sinus infections (another first). I was still smoking around 2-4 times a week, sometimes with friends and sometimes by myself, but every time now I would have to use my inhaler at least once. Time passed with more failed personal experiments and the reaction was getting stronger, on my next appointment with the allergist (again, I was completely honest with him about everything) he put me on another asthma control medicine called Advair, so I started taking this twice daily along with the others. Honestly, it improved things a bit, I was even able to smoke with friends a couple of times without using an inhaler, but time passed and I continued to smoke, and it continued to get worse.
2-6 Months ago
I started to train for a Tough Mudder (12 mile run + obstacle course) around this time and decided it would be best to quit smoking for a couple of weeks prior to make sure I could complete it and not embarrass myself in front of the coworkers and friends I was running with. Fortunately I didn’t, I completed it and the next day tried to smoke hoping things would be better, but they weren’t. This is the point in time that the reaction changed. I haven’t really experienced any wheezing or asthma symptoms since then, the reaction has changed to what you’d expect with GERD (acid reflux). I didn’t really know what this was at the time (aside from hearing about its name on commercials), but after describing my new symptoms from smoking to my allergist and having peak flow meter and spirometry tests done he said I really wasn’t having asthma problems anymore, the asthma is well controlled. He referred me to a GI Specialist.
I had one more appointment with him and tried the last thing that could possible help. He started me on Xolair, which I was hesitant to try at first due to possible side effects. It’s a drug that is injected once a month that can help with allergic asthma and other immune problems. Unfortunately after two injections I noticed it was making my hair thin out rapidly and didn’t seem to be doing much (It should have been working by then) so I stopped taking it.
I saw the GI Specialist, told him about the acid reflux problems and the cannabis reaction. Honestly, this doctor was shit. I feel like he didn’t listen to a word I said, but he requested an endoscopy be performed so I went through with it and he told me he didn’t see much wrong (but he did say I have Gastritis in my stomach). He recommended I take a course of Prilosec and stop smoking. By this point I only smoked once or twice a week because it was getting pretty bad. I couldn’t smoke with friends anymore since every time I got high I’d have to start spitting thick mucus into a cup and it was pretty embarrassing and disgusting. I stopped drinking coffee and started adjusting my diet to be as healthy as possible to get over the reflux, (though still hasn’t quite happened)
The past 2 months: The past 2 months have been shit, I’ve honestly been pretty depressed. It took 2 years but it’s finally hit the point where it is no longer worth it for me to smoke. It’s probably been like that for a while really and I was just in denial, but I can admit that the reaction is so bad that the cons outweigh the pros at this point. Being high just isn't a pleasant experience anymore. I've experienced a lot more anxiety lately and am starting to think I won’t see a solution to this, or at least not anytime soon. I’ve experimented with smoking herbal blends (white sage, mullein, damiana, blue lotus, etc) but it’s not nearly the same. I've been trying to meditate and exercise often and it helps, but I just don’t enjoy life as much as I used to when I knew I could smoke with my friends if I wanted to. I don’t even hang out with them as much now since I can’t smoke and it can get a bit awkward if that's what they're going to be doing. I went 5-6 weeks without smoking recently and gave it a go for the first time last Saturday hoping things would be better, but they were just as bad as ever.
Here’s what the reaction is now:
No wheezing or decreased lung capacity, but immediately after getting high I have difficulty breathing because thick mucus/phlegm is continually pooling in the back of my throat. It’s white so it’s unlikely I have any sort of infection….just an immune response I imagine. I spit it out and spit it out, but it just seems to keep coming. It seems I can expect to be spitting this stuff out at least once every 5-10 mins for a good 12 hours. Aside from this I have decreased appetite, some stomach pain, and eventually bloating/urine retention and abdominal pain. Oddly enough I also seem to get a lot of lower back pain now if I smoke. If my posture isn’t absolutely perfect then I’m in a lot of pain.
Right now I’ve decided I’m done smoking until my acid reflux/stomach problems have resolved themselves…I won’t try again until that happens or I come across another suggestion that might work.
Things I have tried (that failed):
Things I am currently doing (mostly to help with acid reflux/GERD problems):
Things I have considered, but not tried:
If anyone actually read all of this and/or has has any kind of advice it would be much appreciated. Even if you just have another casual drug that you’d suggest that I may like. I’ve tried shrooms and LSD a handful of times and had great experiences, but those (to me) are the kind of thing you do once a month tops. I’m not a huge fan of alcohol, it doesn’t do much for me. I really miss the introspection that weed brought me, as well as the reduction in anxiety and just calm, chillout feeling. Anything similar to it would be much appreciated.

Content Writing and Copywriting

A long post I wrote about the differences between content, writing, and copywriting. Hopefully it will resonate with some of you other writers out there. I hope this is the correct place to put this, as I'm a bit new here. Thanks!
Understanding Writing
Earn more with your writing by learning how to effectively show clients some of the not so obvious differences between content, writing, and copywriting.
In most cases, a writer is to a copywriter what a house painter is to an artist. That’s not to say that you’ll never find a house painter making art, but rather that you’re far more likely to find an artist willing to paint houses. This is because, while both of them can paint, only a copywriter is generally capable of creating art.
Unfortunately, because writing is the second most common form of communication in the world, chances are that nearly everyone you interact with will be able to do it. This makes it a trivial skill in the eyes of most people, along the likes of breathing, or walking. Of course, put any of those people under water or on a tightrope, and they instantly find new appreciation for the difficulties breathing and walking can present.
Sadly, drowning clients or forcing them work in the circus isn’t likely to earn repeat business, however satisfying it might be at the time. Forgoing those option can make it difficult to effectively demonstrate the differences between simple writing and the complexities of copywriting. This is particularly true if you’re not dealing with an experienced marketing firm, or a knowledgeable client. That said, there are steps you can take to make yourself and your writing shine. It just involves a little panache.
Explaining The Difference in 15 Minutes
If you’re serious about your clients, take them out to lunch. You’ve got nothing to lose, and everything to gain. That’s because there’s nothing better than a menu and a hungry client to effectively demonstrate the difference between generic content, professional writing, and copywriting. It also lets you explain how and why they all work together, and more importantly, when they don’t.
I recommend either a steak house or a sushi bar, but depending on the client, you might want to go with something else. The important thing is to make sure that food is available that you can apply a copywriting description to. Having more than one client at the table also helps but isn’t necessary.
For this exercise, you’re going to explain the food as if you were the waiter. Then it’s just a matter of drawing the comparison between your client’s needs and their order – all before their lunch arrives. Because they’re hungry, and you’re describing their food in great detail, they’ll positively associate you with the food rush – especially if you’re good at selling yourself. Just make sure the establishment you select is on par with your skills as a writer. If you’re in DC, I recommend The Old Ebbitt, or Ruth’s Chris Steak House, but anything similarly upper crust will do.
The Selling Points
Just pick whatever steak the client ordered, and offer them three explanations, comparing each one to a particular type of writing. You should have pen and paper, and be good enough to bang this out at the table, or you’ve lost the client.
Your associated price points should account for the time involved in each. A few minutes for content, which equates to the value menu at McDonald’s, a little longer and more expensive for writing, which isn’t unlike Red Lobster, and then the icing on the cake for the restaurant you’ve chosen. Price points should look a little like this:
What we’ve done there is give a common, real world example to the difference between each writing style, pairing it with a price point, and the associated results. In this case, the result is a hungry client, hopefully hooked on your tempting description of the steak they ordered. Don’t forget to point out that copywriting is much more than just ‘per word’ content, and that the $0.20 per word rate is a ground floor. Good copywriting can run upwards of $1000 per page or more – make sure your client understands this, or you’ll be selling yourself and your talents short.
Then you can go on to describe another menu dish, such as chicken, in the same tantalizing manner, and lead into co-branding, where you establish several different products under a single brand, expanding your trust pool. With a little practice, you’ll have outstanding success rates at closing new business.
If you’re having difficulty, just schedule your meetings before lunch at your client’s place of business, bring a menu, and use the same pitch. Just be prepared to buy them lunch and come clean on the marketing aspect of your pitch. Few things are worse than a hungry and irritable person trapped in a cubicle. If you’re visiting someone in a corner office, then you probably don’t need my advice.
Marketing Yourself
For some, getting to this point will take time. Most copywriters are notoriously bad at meeting people, and even worse at closing cold calls or first round meetings. That’s not to say it’s impossible, but rather that it takes work. There is also a level of trust and understanding that needs to be built between client and writer. That can also take time.
It’s helpful to take things one step at a time, introducing yourself and services, and demonstrating how what you do will add value to an organization. Treat it like a romance at first. Do a little extra, be polite, and don’t mention things like your early adoption of Bitcoins, or your part time free gambling habit.
These four steps are far from the final word on how to go about marketing yourself, but they’re a good start.
Step One: Build Relationships
Don’t get me wrong, there’s nothing wrong with inexperienced marketing firms, they just take a little more effort to work with. Likewise, some of the best clients are also the least knowledgeable about the differences in copywriting and writing. This is because capable firms and individuals are usually very focused on what they do, and therefore quite good at it. This is often the reason why they’re not good at writing. Taking the time to work with them usually results in lasting and mutually beneficial relationships.
Step Two: Demonstrate Results
One of the easiest ways to do this is by demonstrating the strengths of both copywriting and writing, as opposed to just focusing on one. By showing how copywriting can build brand, and writing can reinforce that brand, you’re showing how your work will build value. More importantly, help establish brand. Clear, concise, and direct communication is the ticket to accomplishing this and winning the business.
Step Three: Don’t Be An Artist
True, this article opened up comparing copywriting to art, and it is, but professionals rarely want artists. Let’s face it. Artists are unreliable. They’ve been known to cut off their ears, and in extreme cases, drown clients or force them into the circus. No one wants to hear about your art, and the person paying for it also doesn’t care about it either. They just want results, which loosely translated means profit.
Step Four: Be Professional, But Be Yourself Too
At all times, be professional. If your client invites you out for a drink, then have one. Note the emphasis on having one. Don’t press your client into accepting favors, or at all make them feel manipulated. You’re buying their time for a meeting, just like they’re buying your time for copywriting. Keep it professional and honest. Clients worth maintaining relationships with will appreciate this.
As an example, I once interviewed with Latham & Watkins for a low level writing position. I was between jobs, and could have used the work. When it was all said and done, I was told that I was overqualified. The partner who came down to give me the particulars asked if I’d like a drink, and having nothing to lose, I said, “Since we’re all being honest, and it’s late, is a rum and coke out of the question?”
Everyone had a good laugh, we had drinks, and then the attorney who conducted the interview took me out for a few more drinks. We got along famously, and are friends to this day. I didn’t end up working for them, but it was a springboard into other relationships.
So, be professional, and be yourself. Nothing sells copywriting to a client you understand like honesty and sincerity. You never know where opportunity will take you from there.
And You’re Off
On that note, you’ve got a basic set of tools to market yourself, and can build them into your website or other copywriting platform, enabling you to build a better portfolio, and ultimately better clients. The original article appears here - https://hjbuell.com/content-writing-copywriting/
